April's Challenge - Shut the Door

The goal of this challenge is for your dog to push a door to shut it. Here are the rules:

1. The goal is for your dog to shut a door by pushing it. The type of door does not matter.

2. The dog may use nose, paw, or another body part to shut the door.

3. Targeting is allowed

4. Luring is not allowed.

5. Shaping is always allowed.

6. Video submission must include training scenes and the final behavior on cue. Your dog must offer the behavior when cued (verbal and signal cues are allowed). The cue must be under stimulus control - we must see that your dog waits for the cue and does not perform it just on environmental cues.

7. Deadline for video submission is April 20.

8. Leave the link for your video submission in the comments to this post.

9. The winner will receive an On Cue tote bag.

  1. Could you start with maybe a target on the door, to encourage the dog?

  2. What kind of target could you use on the door? (I have plenty of ideas, but would love to hear ideas from others first.) And would you start with the target on the door? Or would you start with the target somewhere else and gradually move it to the door?

There are no right and wrong answers. There are some ways I'd do it, but I don't have *all* the right answers. :-D

  3. I was just thinking a small circle or square of fabric, and then a small loop of duct tape on the back. And I can move it all around.? Just thinking about what I have on hand already. :D

I would start with it on the floor, then maybe on the baseboard, then move up.

  6. Sallie, pick a type of door you haven't trained. . . a car door, refrigerator door, crate door, etc.

  7. I guess something I thought I posted didn't go through. Other good targets are post-it notes and plastic lids with tape. (Keep a pile of post-its handy - you'll need more than one!)

And how about starting with the target in your hand, then move your hand to the door, then the target on the door with no hand?
